GleanSmart: innovating in the reduction of food waste

At VisualNACert we work for sustainability, and that is why we are excited to be part of the innovative LIFE GLEANSMART project, an initiative that is transforming agriculture and tackling one of the greatest challenges of our time.

In early December 2024 a meeting was held at Finca Sinyet with the rest of the project partners — Ainia, AVA Asaja, Artica+i and Odyssey Robotics — to share progress.

Did you know that 28.4 million tonnes of fresh fruit are lost or wasted in Europe every year? That represents 22% of total food waste in the EU. Most alarmingly, 23% of those losses happen at the primary production stage, during growing and harvesting. You can read the news here.

These losses do not only affect growers financially, they also contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions.

The LIFE GLEANSMART project, of which we are proud to be part, aims to develop a new circular value chain based on the precise quantification of food losses.

Our ambitious goal is to recover at least 25% of current fruit losses at the primary stage and transform them into high-value food ingredients.

At VisualNACert we are developing an innovative digital platform that will be the technological heart of this project. Our platform will collect, analyse and visualise crucial data, allowing growers to take informed, strategic decisions to reduce fruit losses. Complementing that platform, our intuitive mobile app will let users access interactive maps, satellite data and management tools in real time, supporting informed decisions directly from the field.
